In Spring 2020 Connex Health and The Pangaea Group collaborated on a comprehensive landscape survey of private payer prior authorization (PA) processes and practices. From the initial white paper, the Simplify Prior Authorization (SPA) initiative was developed. The white paper and subsequent communications campaign was supported by grants from Amgen Canada and Gilead Sciences Inc.
This report presents the results of the 2026 Prior Authorization in Canada Survey. It assesses the current state of private payer prior authorization, compares findings to the baseline established in 2020, and evaluates whether meaningful progress has been made in improving efficiency, transparency, and consistency across the PA landscape. Since that time several other organizations have become involved either as financial supporters, on the SPA Advisory Board or as subject matter experts on specific aspects of this initiative.
